From the Montana State Veterinarians Office -on Canine Respiratory Disease

The State Veterinarian’s office is monitoring an increase in respiratory illness in Montana dogs.

The current illness differs from typical respiratory disease in that the symptoms last longer than expected and do not respond as well to normal treatments. Currently, the specific cause or reason for this difference has yet to be determined.

Transmission is likely from direct nose-to-nose interaction and contact with respiratory secretions. There appears to be no risk to humans or cats.

Several counties in MT have reported seeing dogs with similar symptoms. Ask your veterinarian if they have seen this illness in your area.

Symptoms include: -

  • Chronic cough (>2 weeks)

  • Clear nasal discharge

  • Inappetence

  • Lethargy

  • Fever

  • Some cases have progressed to pneumonia

Recommendations for dog owners: -

  • Limit social interaction with other dogs

  • Ensure your dog’s vaccinations are up to date.

    • Core vaccinations include DA2PPV and Rabies.

    • Bordetella (kennel cough) vaccination is also important for dogs that have increased exposure to other dogs.

    • Your veterinarian will discuss appropriate vaccinations for your pets.

  • Work with your local veterinarian for specific guidance on how to protect your pets.
